We get it – we’ve got friends too who are going all ‘boo-hoo’ on Facebook and declaring themselves Insta-Only sharers. But Facebook does still have it’s place in our communities and there are many, many reasons WHY Facebook is still a brilliant platform for building your business, and WHY it won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

Families & Boomers

Anyone with primary school-age kids knows this is the preferred communication channel for our schools. It’s easy for them and easy for us. No clogging up your Inbox with extra emails, just a quick look on the school FB page and you’re updated when you need.  We also love it ‘cause we can see photos and video updates of our kids participating in activities and sporting events at school plus we can feel part of the school community even if we can’t always be there in person.

While the Millennials all had a big moan that ‘you know it’s time to get off Facebook when your Mum sends you a Friend request!’ this was actually one of the other reasons why those of us with Boomer-age parents or grandparents stay connected. It’s such a great way to keep our parents and whanau involved in our lives without having to call them every day or see them every week. We can Like their sunset photos and comment on that beautiful meal they enjoyed at that new restaurant they visited. It’s no effort and everyone feels the love.

Community Groups

Even if you aren’t on there for your kids or parents, many of us continue to stay on Facebook for our sports, hobbies or other common interest groups. Community groups have been fantastic for our communities! Making us feel connected – sharing the good news and the dumb stuff, we laugh, we cry, we gossip, we emoji the heck out of those posts. It’s a bit of fun and no harm done (hopefully).

Lost your keys? Post it on Facebook!  Found a watch?  Post it on Facebook!  Got something to sell, buy, donate, share, trade…?  It’s all going down on Facebook in our groups and community pages.

Events

The real star in the Facebook cyberspace right now though is the Events functionality. This clever bit of functionality was largely underutilised for many years but has really come into its own. Maybe it’s Covid, maybe it’s our growth as a culture, maybe it’s a combination of both. But as the development of all manner of small local events right through to larger-scale regional events is happening throughout New Zealand, Facebook Events has proven to be the best way to get your seen and boost ticket sales.

This is particularly the case because there’s no Events functionality on Instagram or LinkedIn or Twitter or Snapchat or TikTok. While there are some really great event platforms out there (TicketFairy, Eventfinder, and others), these all rely on people searching for events and they still need to promote their events to be seen. Whereas Facebook delivers all events in a very handy menu directly on your Home page plus you can easily see who else you know is Going or Interested.
